Prepping for Winter

Get your home ready for the coming cold weather and holiday season! These are just some of the projects that are working on to help get our customers’ homes ready for the upcoming winter.



Installing and maintaining. When holiday guests come to your home make sure they have a safe passage to your front door. Frost heaves and rainy weather tend to make pathways in the Northeast a bit uneven. Make sure you check your sidewalks and driveways for cracks. Fill them now to prevent water from seeping in and freezing them and make them even larger. If you need to patch some concrete steps due to chipping or worn surfaces between bricks or up stairways it’s best to do it now to avoid a lot of time and money later.


Lights around your home can enhance the curb appeal of your home while adding a measurement of safety and security by installing low-voltage landscape lighting. They can be placed along driveways and walkways but they can also be ideal for illuminating steps, trees, stonewalls, fences and prominent garden features like a waterfall or garden.


Building a trash shed to hide the unsightly garbage containers is another great way to add to your curb appeal. These sturdy storage containers can have an easy flip up lid so you can quickly toss something away and likewise, bi-fold front doors that will make it easy for the cans to be removed. If you already have a trash shed be sure it’s in good condition prior to the start of winter. Simple rot or a broken hinge could make for a problem when we have a few feet of snow for both you and your garbage collector.


Garage Floodlights with motion-sensors can help you welcome your guests and also provide some warm illumination to your home during cold dark winter nights.


Freeze-Proof exterior faucets are another great addition to a home. Don’t be caught with a burst water pipe! If not immediately noticed a ruptured pipe could be both costly and time-consuming with a clean-up. Replacing an exterior faucet with a freeze-proof faucet in just a few hours could save a great deal of aggravation.


Outdoor weather seals are something you should check on each year because these seals can rip, compress, bend and wear out over time. It’s far easier to restore a new door plus enhance your curb appeal with an aesthetic entry upgrade than tossing more money to your gas/oil provider.


If you have children it becomes a time of lots of boots, coats, and gloves! Be sure to have a mudroom that functions fully with a hand hidden storage area filled with coat hooks, flip-top bench storage and a top shelf for extra storage. This simple addition can add a great deal of function to a home.


Check your laundry area and make sure the hoses and ducts are clean, fully functioning and nothing is flimsy or flammable.


Weather strip and caulk your windows. Older homes become drafty. Again, caulking wears with age and this is another area to look at to make sure you are prepared for the winter months.


Warmth underfoot is another luxury many people are doing with heated floors. Another great way to increase the value of your home while adding comfort.


Often people work from home during the winter months due to the weather. Telecommuting and working after hours from home has become more of a normal event in Fairfield County. Think about renovating a room to make it a full functioning office space.


Be sure to get your furnace serviced with its annual checkup.  Without a yearly cleaning and inspection, a system can wear itself out quickly, pump deadly carbon monoxide into your home and simply stop working. Prepare early and get your service done early in the season.


Gutters need to be addressed and make sure they are clean and ready for the winter season. They offer a great deal of support and if not addressed can lead to rot and long-term decay of your roof.
